Syrian Textile Industry Reaches the International Fashion Houses

Knitting, one of the oldest vocations in Syria dating back to 4400 years ago, came as a result of the harsh living conditions and life demands.

Tablets representing the royal records and textile delivery notes were unearthed at Ebla Kingdom indicating the diversity and uniqueness of this deeply rooted vocation.

Knitting vocation in Syria witnessed a period of depression in the past due to the foreign invasions while it flourished in the Roman age and became stable at the Umayyad era where the Levant was the center of trade at the Middle Ages and the development of different vocations and commodities production opened the door wide before women in the industrial field.

The strategic location of Syria has encouraged its citizens to work in the field of textiles and knitting and the fame of the Syrian textiles have reached the European and American markets, said Chairman of Textile Association in Homs governorate.

Homs has occupied an important place among the other Syrian governorates in clothes industry since ancient times due to the availability of raw materials and its central location where it exported silk and woolen clothes to Rome markets.

Homs weavers knit different types of cloth such as al-Aghabani in addition to different brocaded types with different names according to their shape such as hazelnuts, olive and myrtle twig.

Homs Textiles Association was established in 1970 at al-Qasiria region and it is like a khan / caravansary / that includes many shops selling textiles, Arab abaya, towels and other commodities and customers used to gather near these shops to buy whatever they want.

Each market at that caravansary had a special name according to the commodity sold there.

The Association used to provide textile needs for weavers in the past, but nowadays and after the invention of advanced machineries, textiles have become available with huge amounts at the local markets.

Many families in Homs are famous for working in the field of textile such as al-Bustani and al-Tarrazi families whose influence has reached the international markets as they have expanded their trade in the Arab countries.

Homs governorate used to embrace more than 5000 looms that are not used in our age due to the invention of advanced machines.

Textile industry is a very artistic industry that contributes to activating tourist movement and it is an important economic revenue for many families.
